I'm honestly not that interested in the existing gears, because it's not meeting my expectation. Is there a specific reason you're interested? Are you trying to compare to your current build? They'll be out of the car in a few weeks, so I'll know for sure at that point. Keep in mind, it's 105+ daily here in AZ, so if I can avoid crawling around underneath the car in this heat, I do. lol
Yeah just trying to compare. because I m getting a 8.8 from a friend with 2.73 gears which was I guess common in AOD cars. but I am still debating the 3.73 or 4.10 gears

With the AOD, the 2.73 gears are standard. From 88'-93' the "optional" rear-end gear was 3.27's (per www.fiveohinfo.com). In 87' the optional rear-end gear was a 3.08.

I would venture to guess I have one of the three listed above, if not the STOCK 2.73's.

I've done enough research to come to the conclusion that the rear-end gear choice is really just personal preference (everyone's got an opinion that might be drastically different than your own). I thought 3.73's in my t5 car was too short, but others like it. I feel the current gear in my AOD car is too tall. "If" it was my only vehicle, I might consider sticking with it for better highway MPG (since AZ has endless open roads and surface street speeds are 40-50mph and the usual driver here does 5-10mph over).

well m in cali and she won't drive it much. I had one with 3.55 and I was pretty good...then I bumped up to 3.73 and it was pretty good and didn't burn a lot of gas...

Yup, I've run 3.73's in two different mustangs, and it seem fine (highway use. Marginal difference in MPG). One set was in my 88' notch, the other was in my 12' GT. I've never run anything shorter (numerically higher). So, this will be the first set of 4.10's for me. I figure I need to give the AOD any advantage possible for the AOD hater's. lol

Is there a how-to for the mark and spin method?
I think there is...but a friend of mine that built race cars told me how...he said Mark a straight line on the pinion flange and one on the tire. then have someone spin the tire while you watch the pinion flange until the tire makes a complete revolution to the mark. just make sure to count how many times the pinion mark goes around

The 4.10's are in. The original gear set in the car was, in fact, 2.73's. The shop who did the install, told me to give it 500 miles before getting on it. But I can tell you now, that the engine speed at 40mph is 1,500rpm. The engine speed at 80mph is 3,000rpm! It's keeping the engine in the meat of the power band, but I'll have a better impression after break in.

How does the accelerations feel?

I haven't gotten on it because the shop suggested a 500-mile break in period. I can tell you it behaves pretty nicely in just moderate throttle (city driving). Really helps with the 1st and 2nd gear. In Arizona, we see a lot of highway driving (65-80 mph), so the high RPM's on the highway will take getting use to. I'm a bit concerned when I step to a none lock up stall, that I'll see another 250-300rpm.

I've learned that gears should be carefully selected for the desired end result. What I mean is that the 4.10's will work for me now (NA), but if I go with a power adder later, I'll need to step down. 4.10's are short for highway use, but almost unnoticed during city driving.

A pro auto-trans shop told me to go with the close ratio 4R70W gear set, and step down to 3.55's if I go with a power adder. We'll see. For now, I'm happy.

Well m still hunting for 3.73 gears for the wifes and a 2400 stall converter. I did think about going AOD-E or a 4R70w. But the trans and stand alone controller and trans is a bit much...like 700 for the controller and unk for the tans...

You don't actually swap the trans for an AOD-E or 4R70W. FRPP use to offer the close ratio 4R70W gear set to be swapped into an AOD. So you keep your existing trans, and basically run the 4R70W internals (simplest explantion).

Really...I was just going to do a hole swap lol...but the guy at Baumann said something like that.

Baumans a good vendor dude, but they also offer the electronics to run a true AOD-E or 4R70W. To do the actual swap, would be pricey. The later (electronic) transmissions have several benefits (such as a better valve body), but you can basically get whatever you need out of a built AOD. The 2" band from the later trans can be installed into an AOD, along with the close-ratio gears from the 4R70W. Reach out to Lenntech (for instance), for reputable advise. Your AOD is a lot more capable than some amateurs lead you to believe.

Yeah I got a good amount of info from Baumann that I'll post on here from wat they told me about the AOD's trans n I think upgrades. Also which AOD-E or 4R70W to look for

They don't seem to carry to much stuff for the AOD's anymore. They even advertise the 4R70W 2" wide overdrive band package for the AOD, but when I called (literally a few days ago), they said they don't carry it anymore. I'm not really sure what all Baumann (as a company) does, it just seems like they do a variety of different things. As far as their shift kits, it seems super affordable, and they have a good reputation, so I'm certain it's a good deal. However, I've been entertaining a few vendors regarding the valve body I want to use. I haven't decided yet.

I will definitely be using the 2" OD band, with better friction materials, as well as carbon clutches (additional clutches as well), along with the Performance Automatic A+ billet servo. I have a local builder who is actually familiar with the AOD (which is a challenge in and of itself), as well as the 4R70W conversion components. He also has a local distributor he prefers to use for stall converters and single-piece input shafts. I didn't discuss a valve-body with him yet, but I was looking at Lenntech, PA, or Silver Fox Trans. The trans build might be late this year or early next year.

Yeah AOD stuff is out of date. More people I guess are going to the AOD-E or 4R70W trans. If by the time I get around to upgrade the AOD there's not much out there I will step up to a 4R70W

Unless you want a trans brake or a manual valvebody I'd say get the baumann kit. My car when it still had stock heads on it would blow the tires off on the 1-2 shift and bark them on the 2-3. Now that it has gt40s the thing responds like way more of a beast then it is lol. This is also the only kit that you can raise your shift points to anything you want. Apart from those things, it fixes some pretty significant holding/pressure issues with the AOD and will make your trans last much longer.
