Me and My Mustang

Hey guys. Just joined. Looking to get and share info on the 1986 Mustang GT Hatchback 5-speed. I bought my car new in 1986 and only have 60,000 miles on it. I drove it as a daily driver from 1986 to 1992 and then basically stored it in my garage for the next 27 years. I drove it for fun and to get it smogged. Just started some basic repairs as time has taken a toll on some parts. Thanks.

Looks like you’ve kept it in fine shape! I know the dedication it takes to accomplish that, as I bought my 82 GT in 84, drove it summers until 2004, then paid rent on a garage for it for 14 years until until starting my current restomod project on it late in 2018. Unfortunately, the garage wasn’t heated and mice took up residence, so humidity and rodents took their toll on some things, but not too badly. Please post some extra photos of it! I’d love to see engine, exterior and interior shots of a stock 86 GT.

Like I said, I bought the car new in 1986 and the car is stock except for the stereo (recently upgraded to a Kenwood CD w/bluetooth) and window tinting. The interior is perfect with no sun fading. Brakes, water pump and clutch are original. There is no rust and at 60K miles it runs great!! I was fortunate to always have free storage either in my garage or a relative who lived close by. I now have a 3-car garage so I have room for my Mustang and my Honda Accord Sport and my Acura TLX Advance. I have had the car on the track at Buttonwillow Raceway several times and at Willow Springs Raceway several times with a Cobra Club. I have also drag raced it many times at the Auto Club Raceway in Pomona, CA. Life is good!! Thank you so much for your interest.

Wow, that looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor! I’m amazed that the interior changed so little from 1982 to 1986; it’s virtually identical to my 82 (except for the color and seat material). I hope you photo document the engine compartment and exhaust setup well. That sort of info is getting hard to come by and Foxbodies seem to be getting more popular. I went to my friend’s son’s bachelor party and the guys in their mid-to-late twenties were more stoked over my 82 GT than they were over my 69 Mach I. What’s the top speed on your speedometer? The 82 only goes up to 80mph (I think, without going out and looking) I have to extrapolate my speed based on RPM in 4th gear.

Thanks guys. My speedo goes up to 85mph. I think it is 35 mph/1000 rpms in 5th gear, so to extrapolate, my top speed going to work one morning on the freeway was 4000 rpms or 140 mph. I have the 1986 Ford shop manuals (body, chassis, electrical, powertrain, lubrication, maintenance) so I have all the original Ford information. What specifically should I document about the engine and exhaust? I know it has 4 cats and 2 mufflers. I also had a 1979 Mustang Ghia Hatchbach V8 (140 hp vs the GT's 200 hp) before I bought the GT. No comparison!! I have always loved the Fox body.

For mine with the original rear end, it was 67mph at 2000 rpm in 4th gear (4-speed). I raced a 240z (way back when) with my wife and a friend in the car and made it up over 4000 rpm (so about 135mph). That was with the 2 barrel carb on it. I got a huge off-the-line advantage on the 240z and he eventually caught up, but we were catching up to a car on the highway and both had to slow down. The 240z undoubtedly had a higher top speed, but couldn't match the acceleration of the 5.0, even when I had 2 passengers :)
