Heavy block of iron on rear

What is the purpose of the heavy iron block attached to the 3rd member below the pinion? How much does it weigh?

Not sure how much it weighs and not entirely sure what it's for. I always remove it and have never had an issue. I will suggest having your driveshaft balanced, particularly if you switch to a lower gear. It's not very expensive to have done and might save you some headache in the long run.

I was told that damn thing reduces vibration and wheel hop and adds unsprung weight to the rear... Because we need weight in the rear.

I threw mine away.
I also threw the quad shocks away.
I weighed it, but that was more than 10 years ago, so I don't remember the exact LB's
