Engine Bay Cleaning

I just bought an 86' 5.0 Hatchback and want to clean the engine bay. Any do's and don'ts I should know before spraying water all over the engine? Obviously ill be disconnecting the battery and covering the alternator and intake, but I'm not sure if there's anything else I should do.

Just don't overdo it. Spray it with cleaner and use a brush wherever you can to loosen the dirt/grease. I use Awesome from Dollar Tree. Yellow looking degreaser. Comes in a spray bottle or a bigger refill. Works better than most of the high price degreaser. After you're done with the water, let it dry completely with the hood open.
