Backup camera

I am installing a backup camera in my 92GT. The problem is I cannot get the camera to come on when I put the car in reverse. Only when I touch the camera button. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I'm not familiar why how these work. I presume it's triggered through the reverse light wiring? Did you have to cut and splice into the wiring or did it come with an adapter plug of some sort?
