So I'm trying to decide what motor/trans combo I should use. I'm wanting to go with an automatic. so my question is what trans would work best behind a 4 cam 5.4???

A 4r70w/4r75w or 6r80 are both good choices, I believe. The 4r would probably be cheaper. I looked into one for my windsor motors (the 4r70w couldbe found in the v6 mustangs, so the bolt pattern matches 302/351w). Look up "4r70w j-mod" if you want some info on building one for performance. They can be done fairly inexpensively.

I've heard the 6r80 is good, but I've never done research on them. Plenty out on the web, I'm sure.

Edit: the 4r transmission also came in mod motor vehicles...4.6, 5.4, coyote... not just the v6/pushrod windsor bolt pattern.
