Original 4cyl or V8 question.

I’ve seen several people ask the question on a v8 mustang if it was an original v8 or 4cyl conversion.

What’s the importance?

If the mustang was immaculate and it was a 4cyl converted to a v8. How would this be a negative?

Besides the obvious (motor), what is the real difference in an original v8 and 4cyl?

The main reason people ask is because originality adds to the value. An original v8 car is typically worth a little more. As for real differences, it depends on year and model. Most 4 cyl cars had slightly smaller brakes and a 7.5 rear end, as opposed to 8.8 (pre 86, iirc, were all 7.5... no 8.8 available even in v8 cars). In the manual shift foxes with t5 5 speed, the 4 cyl t5 can be made to work with a v8 by swapping in the correct size pilot bearing. The transmission itself was weaker, had a smaller diameter input shaft end, and was geared differently. Those are a few mechanical differences. Other things such as smaller, cheaper wheels, more basic interiors, and plain exterior trim packages were also common.
