How to identify an OEM Ford rack and pinion?

My rack and pinion is leaking in my 92. I spoke to my mechanic and he said because of the originality of my car, he recommends I rebuild it vs. replacing it, assuming the existing one is original. I don't want to rebuild a rebuilt unit so how can I tell if the one installed is original?
